What is the CaRMS application?

You’ve grinded your way through medical school, received top marks, and now you’re ready to launch your career as a doctor in Canada. There’s still, however, one major hurdle to leap—your future hinges on the results of your CaRMS match results.

That’s why it’s essential to carefully prepare a CaRMS application that will make a favourable impression on CaRMS residency admissions committees, and ultimately land you a placement in your dream Canadian residency program. With our CaRMS program, you will work directly with Canadian medical doctors in your desired specialty to gain advice, mentorship and strategic guidance on how to succeed in the CaRMS R1 Match.

The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) is a non-profit organization that helps medical students find postgraduate residency training in Canada. It’s known for its algorithm-driven application that decides the fate of many aspiring doctors each year. The CaRMS portal centralizes your medical student performance evaluation, CV, activities list, personal statements, clinical electives and letters of recommendation.

There are no guarantees with the CaRMS application. If a suitable match isn’t found, you could be skipped over until the following year. That’s why professionally-guided preparation is so critical.

Are you planning to apply to a U.S. residency program? Be aware that getting matched through the CaRMS program will automatically withdraw your ERAS eligibility.

How does CaRMS evaluate your application?

CaRMS uses a complex algorithm. It evaluates both your application and the medical residency programs’ rank order lists (ROLs), reflecting them both in the final result.

CaRMS seeks to measure and match:

  • Your Rank Order List (ROL) ( CaRMS programs preference)
  • The residency program’s ROL (regarding applicant preference)
  • Available residency positions which change every year

The algorithm starts with your CaRMS match preference first, as stated in your CaRMS application, in order to generate the best outcome for you. From there, it narrows down your list of desired residency programs to help you find the right match.

How does the CaRMS interview process work?

Applicants can showcase their strengths and passion for medical work during a review panel. Unlike a medical school interview, the CaRMS interview focuses on an applicant’s life goals, experiences, and suitability.

What are the CaRMS deadlines?

Please consult the CaRMS timeline on the CaRMS website for exact deadlines and suggested milestones.

Important elements of the CaRMS application

The CaRMS match involves several different assessments:

  • Your CaRMS application
  • Your CV (curriculum vitae)
  • Your personal statement for each specialty
  • Letters of recommendation
  • CaRMS Residency ‘specialty specific’ interviews
  • Canadian licensing examinations (MCCQE1)

Three reasons you need MedApplications to prepare for your CaRMS application

  1. Improve your chances of getting placed in the residency program you want – The CaRMS application process is a stressful one that will determine your future as an MD. Enhancing your application raises the chance you’ll not only be matched—but that you’ll get accepted in your desired Canadian residency program.
  2. Develop a strategy for your CaRMS interviews – Every CaRMS applicant must take part in mandatory interviews. Preparation for these CaRMS interviews through the personal guidance of a Canadian doctor in your specialty, ensures you will perform well, distinguish yourself from other competing candidates, and attain the highest possible rank.
  3. Master the CaRMS application with top Canadian doctors – Apply to CaRMS with confidence and peace of mind. With MedApplications, you’ll be working with a medical doctor from your desired specialty who brings direct experience with your top pick residency program. You’ll receive focused coaching on the nuances of application enhancement, clinical electives, the interview process, your medical CV and more.
