What is the CASPer® Test?
CASPer® stands for “Computer-based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics”. It’s an online test, developed at the McMaster Michael De Groote School of medicine in 2011 and now popular with many Canadian and US med schools as an additional way to screen pre-medical candidates.
CASPer® is not a test of your knowledge or skillsets, but a situational judgment evaluation, a psychological test to measure your language skills, creative thinking and overall “fit” as a medical student and future doctor. In a sense, it is as a dry run for your Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) or MPI (Multiple Panel Interview) as it requires you to respond to the same kind of situational questions asked during final interviews.
CASPer® is now used as a primary application component of the Michael DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University, University of Ottawa Medical School, New York Medical College (NYMC) and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (Rutgers RWJ). In addition, CASPer® is now used in Postgraduate Medical Education (Residency), Nursing Education Programs and other Healthcare professional programs.

How does the CASPer® Test Evaluate me?
The CASPer® Test Involves The Following Components:
During your CASPer® test, you will be asked to respond to realistic, hypothetical scenarios. CASPer® test questions ask you to describe what you would do when faced with a particular medical situation—and why? The goal is to probe your “behaviourial tendencies” and assess your readiness for med school based on how you would react in certain situations. Evaluators will determine whether you:

…express yourself clearly and coherently.
…are responding in the professional manner of a future physician.
The CASPer® test seeks to measure:
Your creative thinking skills
Your language and communication skills
Your professional judgement skills
Your fit for a given medical school
Your aptitude for success as a medical professional
Your CASPer® test will be scored by a team of evaluators, a different ‘human’ rater for each of the 12 sections to minimize bias and ensure a fair and equitable final result. No, you won’t ever be able to view your CASPer® test score. Your results will, however, be confidentially shared with each medical school to which you apply within three weeks of your test completion.
Individual medical schools may ‘weight’ your CASPer® score differently:

How long is the CASPer® test and what is the format?
CASPer® is a web-based test of approximately 90-minutes. There are 12 CASPer® sections in all which break down as follows:
8 video-based scenarios that include:
- A description of your role
- A 1- to 2-minute video
- Three open-ended questions (5 minutes to respond)
4 word-based scenarios that include:
- A short statement to consider with 3 open-ended questions (5 minutes to respond)
