CASPer Tips

The Computer-based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics (CASPer®) has grown in popularity as an added medical school application component in screening pre-medical candidates in Canada and the United States. Initially, CASPer® was developed at the McMaster Michael De Groote School of medicine and implemented in 2010-2011 as part of the medical school application cycle. CASPer® is an online, 90-minute web-based test, used to assess critical thinking, language skills and creativity.

CASPer® is now used as a primary application component of the Michael DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University, University of Ottawa Medical School, New York Medical College (NYMC) and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (Rutgers RWJ). In addition, CASPer® is now used in Postgraduate Medical Education (Residency), Nursing Education Programs and other Healthcare professional programs. The MedApplications CASPer® test preparation for medical school is the leading evidence-based CASPer test preparation program which integrates Mock CASPer® tests, CASPer® simulations, CASPer® scoring rubrics and CASPer® coaching sessions.

What Makes CASPer® Difficult

laptop and stethoscope

Unlike many aspects of the medical school application, CASPer® represents the unknown. CASPer® assesses a medical candidate’s ability to think critically in a highly time sensitive and pressured environment.

The overall skills assessed include, critical thinking, language skills and creativity. While many students may eventually come up with an answer to the CASPer® question being posed, the 5-minute time constraint is incredibly limiting in your ability to fully articulate all of your answer points.

The MedApplications CASPer® test preparation program address the practical skills required to succeed in CASPer® (Speed, Efficiency, Thought Articulation) in addition to the core content that is required to be confident in your answers (Healthcare, Ethics, Legal, Personal Questions). These themes only scratch the surface of what could potentially be asked of you with CASPer®.

CASPer® Scenario

You work in a book store that is not doing financially well. A customer wants to buy a book using the U.S. price on the back, which reflects a value of the Canadian dollar much lower than it is today – what do you do?

CASPer® Scenario

You are on a jury trying to decide whether the family of a child victim should be able to sue a lighter company after their child misused a lighter and died in an accidental fire.
