What is the ERAS application?

Getting into medical school was a lot of work. You spent years studying hard to become qualified as a doctor. Finally, it’s time to take your medical career to the next level—and get accepted into your preferred residency program in the United States. All that stands between you and your career as a working physician is the last step—the ERAS.

Are you prepared to submit your ERAS application? Do you know the ERAS timeline – and have you got an ERAS checklist to guide you?  How will you outshine thousands of other talented applicants from top medical schools throughout the US and around the world? You’ve gone too far to make a critical mistake at the end. MedApplications can provide you with the professional guidance you need to excel on the ERAS– and a great deal more.

Applying in both the US and Canada: ERAS and CaRMS

The Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) is a residency application process that medical graduates use to secure a medical residency in the United States. The application is specific to the US, but success in it opens doors to jobs in the medical field worldwide in almost any specialty.

A successful ERAS application will help you land a placement at the residency program in the United States that you want most.

Are you planning to apply to residency programs in both the United States and Canada? Be aware that the Canadian-equivalent to the ERAS—the CaRMS— runs your application before the ERAS in most cases, and therefore takes precedence. Applying for both, therefore, will likely remove you from potential matches with the ERAS.

How does the ERAS algorithm work?

The algorithm evaluates your application holistically, taking into account your submitted rank order lists (ROLs), your candidate suitability, and your credentials. It then uses all that data to determine your residency match.

When is the ERAS deadline?

As deadlines may change from year to year, consult the ERAS timeline for Residency Applicants here.

What are the requirements for the ERAS application?

There are various components of the ERAS application that go into determining your overall rank. They are:

  • The USMLE, or the United States Medical Licensing Examination is essential to your AAMC ERAS application. Be aware that all of your USMLE attempts and scores will be recorded on a transcript which the ERAS board will consider in its decision making.
  • Your medical school transcript. While many schools report a pass or fail, some states indicate Honours designations for exceptionally well-performing students. In addition to high marks, academic awards can improve your ERAS score significantly.
  • Letters of recommendation. This is a chance for you to verify the authenticity of the claims in your application. Take the time to choose the ideal referees and be sure you know the ERAS letter of recommendation deadline.
  • The MSPE, or the Medical Student Performance Evaluation. It records all your academic and non-academic activities throughout medical school.

What are the steps for the AAMC ERAS application?

Here are the steps to completion of your ERAS application:

  1. Register on the MyERAS portal with a token from the Dean’s Office. This online portal allows you to complete your medical residency application, choose programs, and upload necessary documentation.
  2. The Dean’s Office uploads your supporting documents
  3. An examination board processes transcript requests.
  4. The Program Directors’ WorkStation (PDWS) sends all of your application materials to the desired programs.

What is the ERAS cost – and how does the ERAS token request work?

In order to sign up on the MyERAS website, you’ll need a token, which is a 14-digit code sent to your email address alongside detailed instructions. A non-refundable $130.00 fee is necessary for the token.

It’s recommended that you add support@erasfellowshipdocuments.org to your email list to ensure it reaches you. You can use that address to request support if you do not receive the token. Remember that one token can be used for as many specialties as you want.

Finally, print out the confirmation page, as it serves as the receipt.

Three reasons you need MedApplications to prepare for the ERAS:

  1. Land your medical residency at your desired school in the United States – Landing a placement at your top residency program isn’t easy when you’re competing with thousands of applicants. MedApplications ensures that you receive all the guidance and preparation you need so that you can stand out from the competition.
  2. Learn all the nuances of the ERAS – Why risk a less desirable match—or no match at all—by applying to the ERAS on your own? Completing a strong ERAS application requires the guidance of a top professional. Your doctor advisor will work with you to ensure that your ERAS application adheres to best practices, submission guidelines, and helps to distinguish you as a notch above other candidates.
  3. Be guided through ERAS by American doctors in your specialties – Learn the ins-and-outs of the ERAS from a specialist in your specific field. MedApplications pairs you up with a qualified American doctor who can guide you through your ERAS application, interviews, and supporting documents, while providing you with hands-on experience. You’ll benefit greatly from the advice of a doctor in your field who’s experienced the ERAS before.
