How Can I Know if a Combined Program is Right For Me?

Doctorate PhD candidates prepare for a career where they will spend most of their time exploring and caring for the patients. It is important that the candidates have a passion for each other – most MD PhDs firmly believe that they will not be satisfied with continuing to study medicine or just carry out scientific research.

When and Where to Apply?

Almost all MD PhDs participate in the application process through American Medical College Application Service® (AMCAS®). As part of the AMCAS application, students are PhD students complementing the other two studies: one for why they are interested in MD-PhD training and others on their experiences a significant research.

Which Schools Offer This Type of Program?

At the national level, there are over 100 MD-PhD programs associated with medical schools. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) supports training programs for medical science or MSTPs currently provides training grants that partially support 40 MD PhDs at 45 degree institutions. How Much Time Does it Take?

Students enter into an integrated program that typically lasts seven to eight years. During that time, they meet all the requirements for MD and PhD degrees.

What Can I Do? How Much Time is Spent Like MD? As a Researcher?

A recent study at MD PhD studies, about 75% of US medical graduates doctoral medicine occupy placements or pharmaceutical companies that use their interests for patient care and research. Physicians-MD-PhD doctors are usually faculty members at academic medical centers who spend 70 to 80% of their time to research, but this may vary depending on discipline. Their research can be a laboratory, translation or clinical. The remaining time is often divided between clinical service, teaching and administrative activities.
