How to choose the Best Postbac program for medical school entry

There is a lot of diversity when it comes to postbac programs. Many students see postbac programs as an efficient way to get into medical schools. Some postbac programs are offered by undergraduate institutions, and others are offered by medical schools or private institutions. Some give you a master’s diploma upon completion, others let you add your grades onto your undergrad GPA to enhance your cumulative average. Some postbac programs are structured, others are not. This is the challenge.

Some postbac programs offer pre-med advising, others don’t. Some have direct connections to medical schools, boasting a preference for admissions, and others act in isolation. Some have published rates for medical school admittance, and some shield those data points from prospective applicants.

If the school has a strong program for medicine, it will likely have a similarly strong postbac program. Research the school and think about if the medical school reflects the values and preparation you are seeking in a postbac program.

You may also want to look at location of the postbac program to see if it is in a region close to where you would ultimate want to study medicine. Chances are the postbac program will be better known there, and learning in that environment will prepare you for medical school in a number of ways. You’ll be familiar with the location, even in terms of basic amenities and orientation. You may also be familiar with the campus area (if it’s at the same school or nearby), which always makes school life easier. Getting that local experience can give you a good first-hand experience to reference in your application and interview. As well, you’ll hopefully have time to volunteer, shadow, or work in the local healthcare community, meaning that you’ll already be developing relationships with those in the system, and you’ll be more aware of the healthcare needs of the broader community in which you live. Ultimately postbac programs are a great option.
