How an Irish Medical Graduate made the grade with a three-part NAC OSCE prep program

Hannah was an International Medical Graduate from Ireland applying to family medicine programs in Canada. MedApplications designed a NAC OSCE program for her based on her requirements. Hannah wanted to focus on counselling stations, internal medicine stations and physical exam skills. She felt she was strong in surgical stations and emergency medicine. Based on her needs Hannah took the following programs:

NAC OSCE Online Coaching Program

Hannah was able to start the NAC OSCE Online Coaching Program while still studying in Ireland. She used the 10 sessions over the course of 3 months. MedApplications’ paired Hannah with an internal medicine specialist, a psychiatrist, and family doctor with direct NAC OSCE experience. Over the 3 months, Hannah measurably improved her approach to high yield scenarios, excelled in history taking, and was well organized.

NAC OSCE In-Person Crash Course

After the NAC OSCE Online Coaching Program, Hannah participated in the In-Person NAC OSCE Crash Course when she was back in Toronto. She reviewed high yield scenarios, practiced her clinical skills live on standardized patients, and was observed by NAC OSCE doctors performing mock NAC OSCE stations. Hannah felt very confident in her skills after the in-person crash course as she was able to consolidate her skills and be assessed in-person.

NAC OSCE Mock Exam

Hannah took part in the NAC OSCE Mock Exam. She successfully:

  • completed 12 stations with standardized patients
  • received detailed feedback and rubrics from the NAC OSCE proctors
  • scored in the 85th percentile on her NAC OSCE Mock Exam

Results:

Hannah took her real NAC OSCE in September.  She received her mark back and was very happy to have scored in the 90th percentile (score of 463).

How MedApplications prepared an internal medicine student from the UK to re-take the NAC OSCE, this time with success.

Fouzia was a medical student from United Kingdom interested in applying to internal medicine and family medicine.  Fouzia had taken the exam before but was not successful in passing. As she was familiar with the NAC OSCE exam, she was interested in in-person training only to assist with her NAC OSCE preparation. She wanted to focus on physical exam skills, counselling stations, and her overall organization and approach. Although she knew the content, she felt unable to successfully convey that in her osce stations.

Based on her needs, MedApplications suggested the NAC OSCE In-Person Crash Course, NAC OSCE Mock Exam and one clinical skills coaching session.

NAC OSCE In-Person Crash Course

Fouzia honed her exam skills and performance at counselling stations. Her course included:

  • Reviewing high-yield counselling scenarios
  • Practicing her clinical skills live on standardized patients
  • Being observed and critiqued by NAC OSCE doctors performing mock NAC OSCE stations
  • Building confidence in her physical exam skills by identifying areas in which she needed to improve
  • Receiving helpful feedback from NAC OSCE proctors identifying strengths in Management and Assessment, and her need for improvement in Diagnosis and Communication skills

NAC OSCE Mock Exam

Fouzia took part in the NAC OSCE Mock Exam. She successfully:

  • completed 12 stations with standardized patients
  • received detailed feedback and rubrics from the NAC OSCE proctors
  • scored in the 80th percentile on her NAC OSCE Mock Exam

NAC OSCE Clinical Skills Coaching

It was pointed out that Fouzia needed additional work on management and counselling sessions. She was paired with a psychiatrist and internal medicine specialists for her 2 x 1.5-hour clinical skills sessions, conducted in-person at a location in Toronto. Following her sessions, Fouzia felt more confident and better prepared to successfully complete the counselling stations and formulate strong differential diagnoses and management plans.

Results:

Fouzia took her real NAC OSCE in September.  She received her mark back and was very happy to have scored in the 84th percentile (score of 433).
