Are you wondering what your chances are of being accepted to Medical School?  In the US, Canada – or overseas? What are the questions to ask medical school admissions counselor advisors at your chosen schools? Our team of MedApplications doctor coaches provide some straightforward answers, statistics – and give you five alternatives if you don’t get accepted.

If you’re applying to medical school, it is important to consider that it may not work out exactly as anticipated.. What happens if you don’t make the grade on your first try? While it’s good to visualize and anticipate acceptance at your favourite school, you should also have a back up plan if for some reason you do not succeed the first time.

In this blog, we will give you the stats you need to know on acceptance rates at US and Canadian medical schools. But first, we will look at the experience of waiting to hear back from the medical school. And what you can do if you don’t get accepted.

Surviving the waiting period

That crucial day you find out about your acceptance to medical school seems to take forever to arrive. Until then, you may endure months of anticipation, excitement, fear, worry and stress. The truth is this:  meeting (and even exceeding) the medical school admission requirements Ontario, Canada and US schools specify still does not guarantee you a place in the classroom.

Did my average GPA make the cut? Did I do enough? For many pre-medical students, acceptance day is a time to reflect on their accomplishments, applications, CASPer® preparation, medical school interview, and consider whether or not all the hard work was worthwhile. For a lucky few, it is time to celebrate. For many others, it is a difficult day. Learning that despite your best efforts it just wasn’t enough can be devastating. What went wrong – and where do you turn now?

A “no” the first time doesn’t always  mean never:

Paid medical school admission counselling can provide hope for the future.

At the end of each medical school admissions cycle, MedApplications hears from waves of unhappy pre-medical students who didn’t quite make it. These are the many  who failed to surpass the benchmark of acceptances despite an average gpa score that was more than adequate — and a strong MCAT score. Some feel it unfair – and wonder if it’s the end of the line for their dream. It doesn’t need to be.. Being waitlisted or rejected the first time you apply does not necessarily mean you should not study medicine – nor give up your chosen career path. Each year, the caliber of pre-medical students who don’t receive acceptances is more and more impressive.

First of all, it’s important to realize that lack of acceptance is not all your fault. The modern era of medical school admissions is a convoluted process – a complex algorithm of factors, complicated scoring methodologies and special criteria that would baffle even the brightest science student. Those who get in may actually have similar strengths to you – with the same aptitude for medicine – but they have mastered the art of how to apply successfully.

Upon learning you are either waitlisted – or have received a flat-out medical school rejection, what are the next steps?  What can you do now? Here are some strategies to consider:

Five Options If You Don’t Get Accepted to Medical School

1 Apply Again …More Broadly to Medical Schools Across Canada.

Many pre-medical students apply only to medical schools within a narrow geographic region. Others apply anywhere and everywhere. If you fall into the category of applying narrowly, why not expand your horizons and cast a wider net to include more medical schools that may be a better fit? The medical school admissions requirements Ontario schools have, for example, are different than, say, a school in another province.

If you’re a pre-medical student who selected ‘Ontario Medical Schools’, why not consider broadening your application to include Eastern and Western Canadian medical schools?

2 Apply to an American Medical School

Do you have the right prerequisites for an American medical school? Could you feasibly study in the US? Then, why not consider applying to American Medical Schools? For Canadian and American pre-medical students, applying to American Medical Schools (AMCAS) can be daunting. With a plethora of hundreds of medical schools to choose from, varying pre-requisite criteria and rigorous selection criteria, it is challenging to secure acceptances where you want. However, preferential in-state rules and variable GPA/MCAT criteria might prove valuable for you, depending on your grades, profile and general strengths.

Acceptance rates at US medical schools vary wildly. Average acceptance rates are 7% in the US. For top-tier medical schools like Harvard, the rate is 3.8%. Some really great medical schools in the US, however, have much higher acceptance rates. Like the University of Tennessee, for example that has an acceptance rate of 13.8%. 3. Apply to an International Medical School

For many candidates pursuing medical school in the international forum as an international medical graduate is the appropriate pathway to become a medical doctor. For some students, the International Medical School route incorporates additional opportunities from leading medical schools in Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia, and the Carribean. Again, to ensure success on an application to an overseas medical school, paid medical school admissions counselling really pays. Contact us for details
MedApplications physician coaches have special expertise and success tactics to share on the following:

  1. Oztrekk Medical School Application
  2. Atlantic Bridge Medical School Application
  3. UCAS Medical School Application

4. Pursue a Graduate Degree in a Health Field

Another option is to pursue a different advanced degree, perhaps in a related health field. This is a natural progression from undergraduate studies when medical school acceptance has not been secured. Popular health and medicine-related graduate degrees include:

  1. Master of Public Health for Medical School (MPH Med School)
  2. Master of Epidemiology for Medical School
  3. Master of Education for Medical School (MEd Med School)
  4. Master of Science for Medical School (MSc Med School)
  5. PHd before Medical School

Perhaps life as a clinical scientist is the right fit? Or, you may begin to apply yourself to a successful career in another field. For some, graduate studies provides  a “competitive edge” for future medical school applications. A cautionary word: look before you leap. Pursuing a graduate degree is also a big commitment of time and money. A thoughtful and careful approach to choosing the right graduate degree is essential to ensure you are on the right track for the career you really want.

5. Extend your Undergraduate Degree before Medical School

This piece of advice applies more to those who know they may not be accepted the first time round, perhaps because of average GPA score. Pre-Medical students aiming to recover poor academic performance in their early years of undergraduate may think to extend their undergraduate or pursue an additional undergraduate degree. While this pathway may seem daunting and not appealing, it may be a tactful option for the right student in order to position themselves appropriately for medical school.
