OMSAS Autobiographical Sketch

OMSAS Guide 2018

The OMSAS ABS incorporates a technical, standardized template of your candidacy. The OMSAS ABS is used by most Ontario medical schools in varying capacities on the Ontario Medical School Application. The OMSAS ABS is a time consuming and incredibly important aspect of your medical school application. Candidates are able to include activities from the age of 16. Please ensure that each activity you list on the OMSAS ABS is verified.

The OMSAS Medical Schools that use the OMSAS ABS are as follows:

  1. University of Toronto Medical School
  2. University of Ottawa Medical School
  3. Queen’s University Medicine
  4. Northern Ontario School of Medicine

Pre-Medical students can enter up to 48 entries on the OMSAS ABS. There are a total of 7 potential OMSAS ABS categories. The OMSAS ABS categories include:

  1. Employment
  2. Formal Education
  3. Extracurricular Activities
  4. Awards
  5. Research
  6. Volunteer Activities
  7. Other

Once a pre-medical student enters an item, you are permitted to add up to 150 characters of relevant details. We suggest creating a personal ABS database with verifiers so there are no inadvertent errors.

You will need to assign a verifier to each activity listed. The verifiers can be added by clicking the View/Update Verifier button. You will need to have pre-selected information about each verifier.

Medical School Admissions with CASPer

This section is dedicated to cross referencing your referees with the OMSAS medical school application.

Pre-Medical Students are requested to select 3 referees. Once the demographic information is populated an electronic form will be generated unique to your OMSAS medical school referee. Download and print or save the form. The form will be securely sent to your referee. Do not ask to see your form nor discuss the assessment with your referee. It is to remain entirely confidential. Ensure that you have a committed referee before you download the forms because they cannot be changed once they are complete.
